& Neurofeedback Training

Viviane Houle

BA, MSW, RSW

I am a Registered Social Worker with the British Columbia College of Social Workers (Registration #10977), an Integrative Voicework Therapist, and a Certified NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback Trainer.  Many people come to see me only for Integrative Voicework, others come for a mix of Voicework/Counselling and Neurofeedback, or just Neurofeedback.

I am an approved service provider with the FNHA (First Nations Health Authority) and ICBC.

What is Integrative Voicework?

Integrative Voicework is an expressive arts therapy in which the intentional use of singing, songwriting, vocalization and movement are used to effect positive changes in the psychological, physical, cognitive, or social functioning of the individual. Integrative Voicework can be useful in assisting to:

  • develop confidence and self-expression
  • further the emotional, cognitive, and physical integration of the individual
  • heal trauma
  • achieve optimal personal growth and development
  • allow the client to explore the deeper layers of his or her psyche in a new format
  • develop self-awareness, encourage emotional growth, and enhance relationships with others

“The voice is the muscle of the soul”. Roy Hart

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback a method of training the brain to function more efficiently. By measuring and analyzing brain wave patterns, and providing feedback that helps the brain change inefficient patterns, neurofeedback allows the brain to become more resilient and flexible.

NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback is a powerful evidence-based approach to enhancing mental health and well-being. It is a 100% non-invasive, drug-free, brain training system that helps the central nervous system (CNS) make the best use of the brain’s natural resources. NeurOptimal™ Neurofeedback brain training can help to:

  • increase relaxation and confidence
  • improve concentration and focus
  • decrease anxiety and depression symptoms
  • improve sleep quality

As a Certified NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback Trainer, I work with a wide variety of clients to help with areas such as anxiety, depression, sleep difficulties, concussion, addiction, stress management, scholastic and academic effectiveness, ADHD, aging and cognitive decline as well as performance enhancement (including creative, athletic, executive performance).

I offer in-office individual sessions as well as home rentals. Neurofeedback rental systems for home use and can be a more economical and efficient option for concentrated individual training or use with multiple family members.

How does Neurofeedback work?

Much like a mirror that promotes self-correction, the NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback program monitors your brain waves and then provides “feedback” to your central nervous system about what it has just done. When the software detects a tremor in our brain wave pattern, it sends an audible signal that encourages the brain to “reset” and self-correct. Neurofeedback is similar to physical training for the body in that it allows for flexibility and strengthens the brain, returning the brain and central nervous system to a healthier and more natural state.

Neurofeedback training is based on the scientific finding that we can all learn to change our brain’s functioning through feedback about brain wave activity. The brain is capable of reorganizing itself to the point of producing new neural circuitry in response to specific training – this is currently referred to as “neuroplasticity”. Improving brain function helps to significantly reduce or eliminate the underlying causes of many conditions that cause discomfort.

The system that I use, NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback, trains your entire central nervous system to perform optimally. It gives your system feedback about its maladaptive patterns and your brain decides how to use that information to improve its overall functioning. Nothing is added to your brain, therefore, it is very safe.

Viviane Houle is a Registered Social Worker (#10977) with the British Columbia College of Social Workers, an Integrative Voicework Therapist, and a Certified NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback Trainer. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology (Honors) degree from the University of Alberta and her Master of Social Work degree from the University of British Columbia.  Viviane is committed to developing her skills through ongoing education and training. Viviane is also a professional singer. She lives and works in Vancouver, British Columbia.

For over 15 years I have worked to help people to manage and transform anxiety, depression, chronic illness, loss and grief, change and transitions, relationships and divorce, self-esteem, sleep problems, and stress management. I believe that each person possesses inherent basic health, goodness and capacities for self-healing. I work with individuals to help them access their own resources in order to develop awareness, resilience, confidence and creativity in dealing with life circumstances, past, present and future and to grow through the challenges and changes in their lives.

My approach is holistic (addressing the physical, emotional, cognitive and spiritual needs of the clients) and integrative (drawing from a variety of therapeutic approaches depending on the needs of the client including client-centered, humanistic, and body-centered psychotherapy, integrative voicework, meditation and mindfulness approaches, and neurofeedback).

Client Feedback

“Thank you for the follow up!  My daughter just loves coming to you.  She says it is so relaxing!  Her competition went really well.  She was like a totally different child going into it.  Calm and relaxed, no sign of anxiety on her face whatsoever.  The last two weeks I have noticed a major shift in her behaviour, again much calmer, handling stress much better.  I am so happy to have found you! “
~ K.T. / Sechelt, BC

“NeurOptimal neurofeedback has been a life changer for me! I noticed some dramatic shifts immediately following my first session. I’ve been significantly more joyful, feeling more at ease in my own skin, and more content than I’ve felt in years. I woke up happy, I think for the first time in 5 years.”
~ T. R. / Gibsons, BC

“My voicework with Viviane has been such a freeing experience, both empowering and personally very healing. I was already seeing results and freedom in my singing after the first few sessions.”
~ J. E. / Sechelt, BC

“I had a concussion several years ago and was still experiencing symptoms and, as well, have always had lifelong issues with anxiety and depression which the concussion seemed to exacerbate. I sought out the neurofeedback training after reading many articles and information on the subject. I do find that after each session, I feel better and many symptoms like dizziness have abated. As well, Viviane is very empathic and reassuring. I would recommend this training to anyone who has problems with post concussion symptoms or other issues like depression and anxiety.”
~ L.M. / Roberts Creek, BC

“Her approach is varied, depending on what my needs are at each session, which I love. I feel like I’m not only finding my voice, but finding myself through this work.  So grateful I found Viviane!”
~ K. S. / Sechelt, BC
